Artist Bio

Jessica Whittingham is a mixed-media collage artist from The Bahamas exploring the theme of Bahamian life through a vibrant contemporary lens. Her work highlights notable and mundane moments of island life as a means of fully encapsulating the Bahamian experience, diverting from the sensationalized tourist-geared perspective the broader public is fed about The Bahamas. She uses collective experiences of Bahamian culture to evoke a range of reminiscences, from everyday life scenes to childhood memories that Bahamians can recall.

In addition to highlighting Bahamian life, the intersection of Blackness and nature is core to her work. She interlaces the two as a symbol of nurtured growth and the spiritual connection that the Diaspora has to the Earth. Blackness is centered in all stages of life and across the emotional spectrum, calling attention to Black beauty through surrealist whimsical scenes heavy with tropical flora and fauna, gold accents with vibrant colors and patterns, and contrasting black-and-white found photos.

Jessica has had two solo exhibitions: "It Takes a Village” in 2023 and “The Earth and Her Daughters” in 2025 at CAB Gallery and Studio. Additionally her work has been a part of group exhibitions at CAB Gallery and Studio, Nassau, BH; The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, Nassau, BH; The Current Gallery, Nassau, BH; D’Aguilar Art Gallery, Nassau, BH; Popop Studios, Nassau, BH; Yale Divinity School, New Haven, CT; Current Space, Baltimore, MD; Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD; and Te Arts, Kavala, Greece.
